Homemade chutney for Xmas presents

Just wondered if anyone had tried the Green tomato chutney
recipe in this month's Vegetarian Living Magazine?

I love this recipe and ended up making two batches.
However, for the second batch I found that by leaving the
seasoned tomatoes and onions in a covered bowl overnight
instead of an hour, the flavour is far more intense.

It's so delicious that I'm going to make some more batches
for Xmas pressies which will go into my homemade hampers along with jams, biscuits and other goodies. :T

  • The method is standard for chutneys, but here's the recipe. I don't think the magazine is online just yet as did a google search and found a holding page advertising that it was coming soon.

    500gms Onions
    25g salt
    250gms seedless raisins
    25g root ginger
    4 red chillies
    12 cloves
    1tsbp whole black peppercorns
    600ml malt vinegar
    500g demerara sugar

    Me too!

I will try the chutney recipe though as it looks like a good 'un.

Most my toms still green and only a few turning orange at moment. Still time for them, but if not i'll make the green tom chutney.

I have frozen plums in the freezer ready for me to get my bum in gear. In this month's delicious mag, they have a recipe for tomato chutney. Looks very good

  • The one in Vegetarian Living looks better. I've already made two batches from this, but add a dash of Balsamic vinegar for extra flavour.
  • Made Delia's green tomato chutney with apples the other day. Boiled it all up and put it in the slow cooker so easy. Lovely shelf of pots now.
    It's so satisfying.

Mrs Boo Boo - I'm interested that you used a slow cooker to do your chutney. Can I ask how long you boiled it for first and then how long you cooked it in the slow cooker, and whether on high or low setting?

    Many thanks,
    Saz
