3rd Party / Public Liability

I am a retired gent about to take up shooting again. I have been advised to take out 3rd Party / Public liabiliy insurance cover.

1: Is 3rd Party & Public liability the same thing ?

2: Most of the companies that I've seen on the 'net, seem to advertise Trade cover. I am a private, retired person looking for cover. In this instance for shooting activities,,,,,,, but was ondering if there is a 'catch-all' policy / company that would include all sorts of cover ?

Any advice welcome.

thanks for reading this

  • Hi,

I think in the context of what you are referring to third party and public liability are one of the same thing.

I would suggest you contact a company specialising in sport/activity liability.

    You could try leisure insure
    https://leisureinsure.co.uk/get-a-quote/outdoor-pursuits/

Or perhaps contact the sport shooting society
    http://www.sportingshooter.co.uk/ssa

    Hope this helps

When you say shooting, what do you mean? Going on organised shoots on private land then they should have cover for the shoot. You will have personal liability cover with your household insurance (though clearly this does not cover if you deliberatly shoot someone!!).

    Third party and public liability is the same thing yes;

e.g. 1 Private car insurance - the main section you are paying for provides cover for your legal liabilities (not moral) for causing death, injury or property damage to others while driving (you can't sue yourself). This is Third party cover because it is cover for your liability to third parties (you are first party, insurance company second party)

e.g.2 the personal liability section that comes with your home insurance covers your legal liabilities as a private individual when not driving and within the policy's territorial limits - so if you bump into someone when when walking down the street and cause them to break their leg and they sue you the insurer will cover.

Unless there is a specific exclusion your home insurance will probably provide cover for when you are shooting, but don't cover deliberate acts.

If you have a gun you need to ensure you have the legal requirements (licence, security etc) and insure the weapon under your personal posessions section - you will of course need an adequate gun safe.

Why don't you investigate becoming a member of the British Association of Shooting and Conservation and your insurance is included in your membership.

  • Thanks guys for taking the time to reply.

BM: I have e-mailed both places that you mention.
BD: I had already dropped those a line this morning.
DB: The legal side of things are well understood, as I've done this in the past.
The shooting that I want to do is more vermin control than organised, on private land.
I also want to do some squirrel hunting for meat, but that will be with an air-gun.

I hadn't considered Insurance for the purpose before and the only 3rd party cover that I had in the past, was in the building trade. That seemed to cover almost everything where the general public are concerned,,,,, so I was wondering if that cover would suit this purpose.

I've e-mailed all these suggestions thanks, so should know a bit more in a day or so.
    thanks again.
