Maybe these companies recognised that modern thinking about disabled people is that they should helped to be independent, rather than have ' a volunteer do it for them'.

The ones that were mentioned to these companies are DEAF/BLIND and there is not a lot they can do for themselves, more or less stationary beings without help and "volunteers"

  • There is a lot of software out there to help very disabled people - as your original post acknowledges. Speak to Sense. This charity needs to get into this century - donors can spot amateurism a mile off.

This wasn't a charity i asked them from, it was a group who were going to set up, IF they got the support they needed, rant and question time is over, thanks for reading.

Sometimes you need to email the right person. Big companies are just that. If someone receives a begging request that isn't their remit they they may well ignore it rather than forward it to the correct person/department.

There are charities that provide various computer tools or software designed to cater for all disabilities, its not down to the manufacturers to hand them out as freebies (businesses dont work like that). They may produce various hardware for various disabilities, but the materials and construction of such appliances cost money.

They may offer discounts to certain registered charities, who buy and pass them on to customers, but there is no way they could afford to mass produce them and simply hand them out AS charity, this is why we have charitable organisations.

Part of the reason why the equipment is so expensive is because there isn't a big enough market for it. Whereas, if this software or hardware related to a game, (ie, something like the Wii) it can be sold for less because more people would (generally) make use of it.

There is no VAT paid on adapted items.

I shall re-iterate that My mother and her Husband are both BLIND, her husband is also partially DEAF, they have both got laptops and pc's adapted to suit their needs, they would not want volunteers to pop around and do the work for them.

Joe Bloggs could write a letter for a laptop claiming it is for some charity, by simply putting the word "test" on the label is not really adequate, companies do not hand out new or used components as freebies to Joe Bloggs, however they may offer a service for a recognised and registered charity, I am afraid Joe Bloggs with the word "test" in their title would not be classed as a registered charity.

The very idea of a voluntary sitter, prepared to read and write for others would come across as "patronising" particularly to my mother and her Husband, who pride themselves on the ability of using the technology already at their disposal to read and write for themselves.

They certainly did not get such technology for nothing, it cost them a fortune. They do have registered charities who are able to assist and even offer them certain appliances (from wide handle pan sets to adapted kettles), when it comes to adaptive technology, companies do not hand them out (even to a volunteer prepared to care for them), such things cost too much money.

For the sake of it i will tell you only once as you don't seem to know what deaf/blind is, then i will not be posting on this thread as i do not wish to go into massive details and start proving things when it has been a failed labour.

As for your parents not wanting anyone to "pop around" well that is their business and i hope you don't think you speak for everyone, maybe your being argumentative or in a !!!!y mood i don't know.

Take a look and see what that guy there is doing - HE IS BLIND AND DEAF AND HAS BEN TRAINED ON A COMPUTER BY VOLUNTEERS!!!!!! So just shut up mate.

This is probably the most ignorant comment I've ever read.

You're suggesting that deaf and blind people are stationary people who can't look after themselves? Jesus, you need a clip around the ear, or even better a boot to the face.

Plenty of blind and deaf people can live their lives as more than a mere stationary object that relies on others. Where I live there is a blind lady who works as a self-employed languages tutor. I'd imagine she'd be mortified to read your comment.

Was there any need for abuse? I am not being argumentative one little bit, I am merely stating that companies dont do hand outs.

I am sorry if you dont like that, I suggest you take it out on them not ME, its probably a very good idea you dont write again with that tone!!
