Resigning or Getting Sacked?

lol yes i want to remain in employment with this company. My financial situation in the last 2 months have changed whereby i have had to pay 1k to university regarding my fees aswell as alot of other things. I have several outgoings which i wont be able to maintain without this job.
No verbal or written warning has been issued to me in the last 12months. Anyways i am off to work now. Will have a chat with the duty manager to see if she gives me a heads-up on how it is all gonna end.dmg24 wrote:Do you still want to work there? Would you not rather have a clean slate somewhere new?
Am only asking because I was in your position with a part time job, albeit through genuine illness(!), and dreaded getting ill because I knew I'd always be hauled in the office the next time I was back in. In the end I resigned after my final written warning (because I'd taken a day off when my grandad died). Unfortunately I went into a job that was even worse, but that's a whole other story ...
Whatever happens, good luck x0 -
Let us know what happens! Remember to ask for a copy of their disc policy (get one before the hearing if you can) - if you have no previous warnings, they are very unlikely to be able to sack you for being sick in the conditions you have described.Ex board guide. If it does come under gross mis-conduct (which I think is a bit severe in this case) then you can be sacked. However you should also have the right of appeal if it comes to that.We all evolve - get on with it0

I find it quite bizzare that when you are off sick, the number of times matters more than the length of time off. I have had a couple of odd days off sick ( I work in a kitchen so you have to for certain illness), then I had to have two weeks off due to a chest infection, it surprised me to learn that employers are more concerned by odd days off, and yet most people will struggle into work after a day or two off, not realising that it could trigger a disciplinary. you may as well take a fortnight off! a work colleauge has has more than a month off with "stress" and nothing has been said, yet the girl in the kitchen with me has migraines and had 7 absences in 12 months and got a warning! it seems very back to front to me, surely everyone should be assessed individually rather than on this ridiculous policy.0

The "problem" is that you self certificate for anything not over a week and therefore there is no "proof" that you were actually ill. It is certainly the number of sickenesses that cause problems rather than total number of days or number of days in a single occurance though as having 2 occurances of 10 working days each is you getting sick twice in a year and being unlucky to be hit hard/ get something "serious" but to have 20 occurrances of 1 day illness in a year either means you are very unhealthy, very unlucky or taking sickiesAll posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

So how did you get on Ice?

well they postponed the hearing to Monday next week 4pm. The duty manager (who will be making the decision) is being cool with me and i do get on with her because she used to be my line manager so in that sense it is looking a bit more promising.
I have just remembered something (and i honestly did forget) but i did recieve a written warning about my Lates and absences about 14-18months ago. It was more to do with lates from what i remember.
i think i did the sickie because quite frankly i could get away with it (for 18months anyway) coupled with behaviour of some managers who treat people like sh*t. Admittedly they have improved their conduct in last 6months or so. My job wasnt integral to my life until recently so i guess i cant blame people for sayin i should now get what i deserve.0 -
How did the hearing go?
Hope the news is good xGone ... or have I?0 -

Did you ever get a copy of the disciplinary policy? It would be VERY RARE INDEED to have a disciplinary policy in which previous warnings are not removed from the file after 12 months. Both sides are supposed to 'forget' about the warning after this time (assuming that this is what the policy says) and the company can't use an old warning as the basis for escalating you to a later part of the disciplinary policy now.
(I hope this is clear - I am not doubting that you genuinely forgot about this, after all this time.)
There is a sample outline of a disciplinary policy here, and you will note that this explicitly contains a section on 'Length of time disciplinary notes will remain on employee's file' as a key clause!

Hi im having a bit of trouble at work with sickness i have been there for 3 years and phoned in about 15 times with sickness.. my boss is quite a bully so therefore has decided to let the headoffice look into it
Can i get sacked on the spot or do you have to get warnings such as verbal and written first?
thanks0
