Lettings Holding Deposits: Refundable or not?

Hello all,

Quick query for those of you in the know...

I recently put a £400 deposit on a rental property (haven't yet signed a lease) to reserve the property, however, the company I work for now want to send me to Aberdeen rather than keep me in London which means I won't be going to live in the property. The agents said that this deposit was non-refundable but I've never signed anything agreeing to this. I understand that £100 of this was for admin (reference check etc.) so I wouldn't begrudge that but what about the remaining £300?

Any ideas anyone?

Many thanks

  • I am in the same boat but we paid the month and a month and signed the missives and then the landlord changed his mind not us about letting us in now the agency wont hand over the full amount and is keeping £190 but our credit check from them was £50.

So where do we stand as well thanks.
  • Are you company picking up the cost of this failed rental or giving a like minded concession ?
