Car insurance nightmare!

I'm lost with all the insurance malarky.

Series of events:
  • Car accident in previous car in October 2005, not at fault, settled for £3500 of damage (I suffered whiplash along with mechanical damage to car)
  • In between, many happy years of motoring
  • Renewed car insurance with Budget, due to start on 5th September
  • This morning had an accident; waiting to turn into the junction and a lady decided paying attention is not the best thing in the world to do and.. straight into the back of me. Limited damage to my car, but neck/back injuries - went to the hospital as a precaution. Rang own insurers who have been brilliant at sorting things out.
  • Have, on advice of my partner, called the new insurer (as of 5th Sept) Budget to advise that I've had an accident and to make sure their records are correct. Spoken to in a terrible manner, being asked questions I cannot possibly know at this point (e.g what is the total value of the damage - even when I've explained that my car is due to be assessed tommorow). Really unhappy with the chap on the phone, so I decided to have another look on the insurance-scraper sites (via MSE.com) for the cost of a policy declaring this additional accident (which the insurers have confirmed is not my fault and wont affect any NCB). Found a new policy that is cheaper than the one I was due to renew with, even taking into account the admin fee for cancelling within the cooling off period.

Can anyone think of anything I haven't done? I just want to make sure that my future insurer is aware of the claim and doesn't use it as a tool to try and void my insurance or anything.

Budget were appalling on the phone and I'm happy to pay the £38 admin charge to cancel in the cooling off period if that's how they're going to be.

Thanks for any help, I'm pretty drained now.

If your policy has already begun with Budget then you can't cancel.

Make sure you return your certificate (use recorded delivery). They won't process a cancellation without it (or your declaration you have destroyed it)

The Budget insurance doesn't (or rather, didn't) start until Sunday 5th September - I've already rung and cancelled it.

I'm just worried there's going to be soe secret handshake I should have don to stop them turning around and saying "ah Sir, but you didn't tell us this.."

You should get a copy of what you have told your new insurer (including regarding your recent incident). Check it's recorded when you receive your documents.
