Finding a place to rent in London

hey everyone,

I really hope someone can help me. I am asking for a friend who is in dire need of a decent place to live in the London area, she starts uni shortly as a mature student and has a pet.

She has tried all the obvious places; spareroom, Loot and the local paper, letting agents and even the uni but keeps finding theyre are waaay out of her budget or plain grotty. She really isnt looking for a palace or anything and is likely to be a long term tenant too (due to her uni course).

Please can anyone suggest places she might try.

Thanks

Jen

    Hi

'The London area' is probably too vague. It's a pretty big place down here! Which Uni? That'll give us an idea of where to start :)

What's the pet? Dog, cat or other? (Makes a difference.)

The dog is old now, 14 I think.

My friend says anywhere with a garden east on central line (right to the end) or south within zone 2 or north within zone 4 (she knows it gets expensive there tho).

    Has she tried the Gumtree?

    What's her budget?

If she's finding properties of the standard she requires are over-priced, then its symptomatic that her budget isn't sufficient for the type of property she desires or she needs to find a nicer property in a cheaper area. Adjust expectations?

Has she got any family members who will foster the dog while she studies?
  • Budget is £1200 at the most for a 2 bed, although second room can be small/cupboard as its just for her to study.

That's a very generous budget for a student. Does she receive any benefits?
  • I've just found a furnished two-bed terraced house not that far from me in Zone 3 at £165.00 p/week through George Ellis & Sons which is allegedly fully-managed. Doggy might be a problem

I've no idea its just the info she has told me and I am hoping you the posters on here might have something to offer in terms of ideas.

  • Moveflat dot com is a very good site for London and some other places, free for lodgers and tenants, cheap for landlords. Lots of cheap and good quality places, intelligent, efficiently run site, well moderated, started by a landlord about 10 years ago. And no, I don’t work for him or used to or have any connection with him or his staff.
  • i was going to say that renting a self contained flat in London as a student was unrealistic and then I read that she wants to rent a 2 bed flat with a garden! This really isn't realistic.
