When does a no claims bonus "expire"?

My OH and myself have always insured 2 cars, both with max no claims bonus. About 2 years ago one car died and we have had only one since then. Now we wish to get a second car.

As I have not used the no claims bonus on the second car insurance for 2 years or so does it still exist or will I have to start again from scratch?

Thanks

  • I had the same trouble once, some places allow 2 years off and others 3 so you should be OK still, you might need to go to a broker.
Nothing to see here, move along.

I was told two years. However, I also remember being told that I could 'register' my no claims bonus so that it would last longer. Maybe you could query this with your current insurer.

Was this a "special" just for you for some reason?

They now have this note regarding bringing them "old" NCB:
N.B. This no claims discount can only be used on one policy at any one time, and must have been used on a policy within the last two years.

2 years is the industry standard, although in reality this can be negotiable.
  • Inquire with your last insurer first, they might well be happy to give you all the no claims.
