Halifax o/d charges

I have a debit account with halifax which I no longer use as i've a joint accont now with my new husband, which we have had for 10 months now. I had been paying into the old Halifax account as it had an overdraft of £800. I wanted to close the account and organise a payment plan, but they did not let me. I recently found out that since November 2009 I have been paying £1 pe day in o/d charges???!!! Until June this year. I went straight into my Halifax branch and after a second attempt I spoke with someone who was actually willing to help stop these charges. I have managed to stop them only to have my p/t salary paid back into this un-used account and set up a standing order into my current joint account. The problem I have areb the charges were not communicated to me clearly (otherwise I would have done something sooner) and due to the fact theaccount is no longer in use I feel cheated out of hundreds of pounds. can anyone tell me if it is worth/possible to try and reclaim some if not all of thse o/d charges? if so what is my first step?

You can't recalim this because it is the standard cost for usin the overdraft now. The £1 per day replaced the monthly interest that you will have been charged prior to the implementation of capped fees.Best Regards

I do think, due to not actually using this account, the charges are a little discreet to say the least as they could see that the account wasn't part active over a period of time. Why did they not write to me? Why are they banging on these charges without prior warning sufficient enough to avoid paying them charges still?0

Halifax wrote to all customers last October informing them of the new charges.
Since December the new charging structure has been detailed on each statement you receive.
If you are due to pay charges the amount is shown on your statement and is collected 1 month in arrears.
The fact that the account is not being used has no bearing on the charges.
Are you saying you didn't receive the letter detailing the new charges last year? Did you not receive any statements between December 2009 and now?
Or did you just ignore them?0 -
Or did you sign up to online billing, stop using the accounts and stop checking the online statements?Getting married 02.08.14

I did stop using online banking as every direct debit and standing order was cancelled. had no cause to use it, I work part-time and simply could not pay the amount off straight away so was paying into the account on a regular basis, but not my salary. Not quite clear why I am being held as having done something wrong by your insinuations, that is not the purpose of this website forum???? I did not receive a letter stating about being charged £1 per day, if i had i would have acted much sooner to arrange payment plan!! I do NOT want to be charged for nothing??0

hi
i think you're being charged for the overdraft, plain and simple
if they didn't inform you, or you don't receive statements for this account, that's an issue of communication between you and the bank
unfortunately (or fortunately), you're not being charged for nothing...it's that pesky overdraft wot done it0 -

The purpose of this website is for users to ask and answer various questions. People are going to give their opinions on a forum, bearing in mind that what people say is reality and sometimes that hurts if it's not what you want to hear.
As I stated the £1 per day charge replaced the interest, so Halifax will argue it is not for nothing. Besides the written correspondence, there was a massive outrage at the time, and it was pasted absolutely everywhere including this site.
Are you able to apply for an account elsewhere to transfer the balance?Best Regards

As already pointed out to you the charges are detailed on your statements. These you chose not to read.
If you had not opted for paper free statements and letters on the account you would have got a printed statement through the post.0 -
Carol, I don't agree with a lot of the comments on these forums as a lot of the bigger posters will probably already be noticing. I'm more the type of person that gives advice pertaining to the use of your voice and I don't like this "aw well, my fault" attitude that we as customers have grown to adopt.
I would be getting back in touch with the bank, explaning again that the account was un-used and that whilst you 100% agree that it is your responsibility to check the account through reading your statements you felt there was no need as no activity would have been taking place on the account to your knowledge.
Even if you can get some of the money back it's better than none but dont sit back and walk away without trying damn hard to get something.
Again, like I tell everyone, I am more than happy to take you through the steps that I would take in your circumstances and these are steps that up till now have proven to be successful for me in getting money back from my own bank.
PM me and we can see if there is a way to get something back.0
