South Africa calling.

Options
Hi Peeps,

I hope this is the right place for this question. And before anyone says it yes I know I could just answer the phone :0)

I have had several missed calls from a Johannesburg number and wondered if I am alone.

The two numbers that have been ringing are; 27 11 7899462
and 27 11 789981

I have a friend who lives there (no its not her :0) Who thinks it is probably a scammer so has advised not to ring back etc.

So I just wondered if anyone else has had any random phone calls from South Africa and whether I should just ignore or take the plunge and answer the next one.

Cheers all.

Dont let it worry you, if it is taht important they will leave a message but it sounds maybe its a scam
  • It's definitely got to be a scam, but I could be wrong.

Lately, almost everyday I had been getting a phone call from a Pakistani, or other that can barely speak a sentence in English. (I'm not racist, but Pakistan usually comes up tops in my thought pattern in this regard. It could be from Africa, India, or another place.)

This same man kept ringing up between 6:30pm and 8:30pm saying that he's calling on behalf of a security firm in regards to recent windows security holes. A quick 1471 yielded the number 019476632176. A quick Google yields interesting results. Knowing full well that he was wanting to scam me, each time he called, I kept doing various things to get him to stay on the line and rack up his phone bill. However, the Google search comes up saying that some people trying calling the number only to be told that it doesn't exist. He still calls me to this day. I simply put the phone down (not hang up) and leave him trying to get my attention.

I also got a call from a woman at one point who also tried to scam me, but the line went dead half way through one of her sentences. 1471 yielded an interesting number 01234567890 (no joke.)

However, lately they've grown half a brain cell and are now withholding their numbers.

I'm thinking next time I might do what that bloke did to a advertisement caller and act like a policeman investigating the death of the person who the salesman was calling.

01234 is the dialling code for Bedford.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
  • Even if 01234 is a valid area code, the total number doesn't exist.

Can't remember which but I know a company (think it was a telecoms one - talktalk, maybe) I use has a call centre in South Africa so could be legit I suppose. Makes a change from the downtown Delhi accent anyway.

Interestingly 01234 56789 is a number for Nationwide Energy. See http://www.nationwide-energy.co.uk/energy_people.html
