Laptop Electric Shock!

Currently volunteering in Tanzania, have lots of computer work to do so brought my Toshiba laptop with me. It has been fine for the past 2 months, but today I plugged it in using the mains charger and the USB port gave me a tiny electic shock. I then took out the charger and got a huge electric shock!

Help.. what will resolve this??

It's not at all unusual to get very small electric shocks from USB ports - particularly when you disconnect devices and also during accidental shorts. They should come to no harm, as they are designed with over-current shutdown protection, though they may stop working until you reboot the laptop.

If you are getting static electric shocks to the outer part of the charger plug, that is nothing to worry about either. If you got a mains electricity shock (which is not something you will confuse with static electricity if you actually get one), stop using the charger and either replace it or at least have an electrician test it.
  • I had a similar problem with my Sony laptop with electric shocks from the left hand side of the laptop (VGA, HDMI slot etc). Had it checked over by Sony but they couldn't find anything wrong...
