Motorbike Parking
Wonder if anyone can help. I've just doine my CBT and got my first bike but I'm hearing very different stories as to where I can and can't park it. Is there a definate guide out there or does it just go along as my friend says that you can park it anywhere as liong as it's nmot causing an obstruction?
Thanks for any advice.

Not causing obstruction or breaking any parking restrictions that may be in place, just like cars really, you cannot just park anywhere just because it's a bike.Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0

Tell us where you live/work and we can give you a better idea. London for example publishes all of the on-street bike parking bays, as does Bristol. Bike parking at London Heathrow and some other airports is completely free of charge.
Welcome to the wonderful world of two wheels. I have not paid to park my bike in 5 years and 75,000 miles of riding.

I live in Bolton and work in Manchester and Salford Quays. I do have access to a car park at work but the first available place to park my bike is on floor 12. For that I'm still using the car for the moment as my parking space is on floor 5.0

If you parking space on floor 5 is reserved for you, why can't you park your bike there?Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0

The line is "car parking spaces are reserved for cars, motor bike spaces are available on every other floor". Like the car parking spcaes they are given out on senoirity within the office.0

Be careful in Manchester as you now have to pay to park your bike in a regular car space. You can still park for free in the few bike bays that exist - http://www.manchester.gov.uk/environment/parking/motorbikes.htm
This is a good site for info on bike parking - http://www.motorcycleparking.com
You may also find it useful to join your local branch of MAG (Motorcycle Action Group) http://www.mag-uk.org . Not only do you get to meet a great bunch of bikers but you also support an organisation that stands up for bikers rights. At a local level they ensure that councils stick with their standards for provision of motorcycle parking, push for access to bus lanes (successfuly in the case of Bristol, my local area) and support campaigns like Kill Spills - the anti diesel spill group.

Different places seem to have their own rules.A friend couldn`t find a bike park so put it on a meter - and paid. He got a ticket as meters were for cars only. When I lived in Maida Vale,my street was residents parking. But I couldn`t have a permit to leave my bike there. There are a couple of bike parks here, but if you park out of the bay -you pay, which seems fair.0

Got to agree with suffolkb on this one - every council does it differently.
I live in Derby, where you can park a motorbike (without sidecar) in any standard parking bay or on street parking area for free. The council owned car parks are also free for bikes.
They are also trialing bus lane access for bikes at the moment.
Nottingham is simlar, where the traffic wardens have told me it's fine to park in the bays or on street parking for free.
Thinking about it, how would they prove that you hadn't brought a ticket, stuck it to your petrol tank, and then it had been nicked or fell off in the rain. Unless big brother's watching that is......0
