Car warranty issue

I think I know what action I'm going to take...but before I do, I thought I would ask for input.

The vehicle I own is on a 08 plate.

I have just returned from the garage where the car has been in for a service.
Whilst organizing the service over the phone I mentioned that there is "white rust ?" starting to show on all 4 alloy wheels. The rust is localised to the area around the manufacturers badge at the centre of each wheel.

My local franchise (who I may add are very good) say the manufacturers stance will be that, as each wheel has minor damage (kerb/scuff marks) they will refuse to repair/replace.

I am thinking of emailing the manufacturer direct to explain my situation, something along the lines of the following:

The kerb/scuff marks are at the perimeter of each wheel with the localised rust at the centre of each wheel.

It is unreasonable of the manufacturer not to expect wheel perimeter damage through day to day use, as such this should not hinder any warranty claim.

any more ideas that could strengthen my case would be appreciated

  • I would expect scuff marks on most wheels of the car, especially as the current Lady Freda unfortuantely found a set of keys for MY motor.

As for white marks or other, I would suggest this fault is with the wheel itself, not the way the lassie drives the car.

First theres no such thing as white rust. Rust is rust, I.e. Iron oxide.

Alloy wheels are indeed an alloy made primarily of aluminium. Therefore they cannot "rust" (and oxidisation isnt a problem as aluminium as you know it is always oxidised as it does so in seconds when in contact with air moisture)

What you are seeing is either acid etching and/or corrosion. Both appear white (almost like a fungus in appearance) and both could be called "rust".

You need to find out which as acid etching would be your problem, as it occurs from the use of wheel cleaners containing acid to remove brake dust.

Corrosion is a different issue, and shouldn't be serious after 2 years. All wheels get it over time and its rarely an issue. If its serious then you should chase the dealership where you bought it.
    Back by no demand whatsoever.

Is cosmetic wheel 'damage' covered by the warranty?
  • The pic taken from mobile, so not the best quality.

4743hudsonj - have you any idea what causes this...road salt maybe ??
