  • Ok, at the risk of opening up a can of worms, how do I find out if it's genuine other then waiting for an e-mail back saying one way or another?

If you only need software for a few months (as I did when I was a student) can you buy it legally (license, subscription, whatever) then sell on the software, or the pc it's stored on instead of having it sat there not doing anything?

To check the Factory Restore path of the machine. :)

He would still need a valid license which would have come with the PC ... :) If he lost the license in whatever form (CD, sticker, piece of paper, email, ...) then he lost the right to use it.

And do you know any manufacturer who pre-installs software like "Adobe Creative Suite 5, some CAD packages ..."? :p

Why don't you get home and check the exact versions installed? Instead of just asking a load of hypothetical questions. What's your hurry? :)

Get hold of proof or purchase or ask the company who make it to see what record they have of it being registered. Taking it to be genuine must be based on some positive evidence of purchase/ownership rather than 'i've got this copy and don't have anything 'proving' its a dodgy copy so assume its ok...'

will depend on the specific Ts and Cs but generally yes there is often a clause allowing you to transfer ownership of your license to a 3rd party if you erase all copies you hold and hand everything over to them. Usual exception is operating systems (eg windows) that come as OEM editions pre-installed on a new PC, they are tied to the hardware so you can sell the PC with the OS on it but not transfer it to another machine (even another one you own)

    Allow me....
Even then, I don't have the Vista disk so how do I go about formatting it?

    All advice is gratefully received!

Because I thought I'd ask a couple of questions on here and see if there was a straight forward way of checking these things. I have no discs, documents, stickers, e-mails, proofs of purchase, or ways of finding out if it's legal (not immediately anyway) so I was asking for ideas.

I'll e-mail Adobe and ask what the procedure is for finding out and go from there.
