I was thinking about getting the 30gb or 60gb one but had a couple of questions:
1) Does it play back Divx or Xvid? HI've seen software out there to convert divx to other formats, but approx how big is a 700mb divx when its converted?
What is the video playback like on this? Does anyone ever actually use this feature? Does it suffer from jerkiness or pixilation?

No it doesn't, not sure maybe a bit bigger or smaller but not significantly different, its rubbish not for the reasons you mentioned but because its tiny and eats up the battery.0

I use Win avi to convert to iPod, no jerkiness or pixilation. You can specifie the quality of the output file so the better quality you want the bigger the file. I use the medium quality settings and the file size is between 500 - 600. With the screes being so small you cant tell the differance between the medium and better quality settings. My daughter watches her movies on hers all the time. Daughters Battery last for about 5-6 hours watching video's (30 gb version) but the 60 gb version has a longer battery life. If your just playing music the you can get over 8 hours+.
When you first get your iPod the batery dosnt seem to last very long at all but the more times you charge it the longer it lasts.MSE:-)MoneySpendingExpert (-:0 -
Does anyone know what the battery life is on the 30gb and 60gb if I update the firmware to the latest versions for just watching movies?
I'm thinking it could be a useful tool for watching episodes of the Simpsons/South park etc whilst travelling in trains/planes?0 -
A DVD converted to a iPod format is about 500Mb, playback quality is fine. Converting rips in AVI and Divx format seem to stay about 700Mb, quality really depends on how the original rip was done.0

hi could you let me know which software i should use how much does the software cost?0

ramit - the battery life is dependent on a lot of things. The higher the compression of the video and audio streams the shorter the battery time. Equalizer, screen brightness, accessing the menus and reading the through the playlists all affect the battery lift as well.
for 60GB - battery life for video play is 3hrs
for 30GB - battery life for video play is 2hrs
Have a look here for some battery FAQs0 -

You may want some software in order to 'rip' from a DVD as well as to convert other types of files to make them suitable for playback on your iPod.
MediaCoder is free. http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/0 -
Videora does a great job at converting media into mp4 format. It's free and works great.0

ive got a 30gb ipod and thought i would never use it for videos due to the small screen but for killing time on the train its great.
If you already have a file on your pc the new itunes can convert them for you or you can use a special free version of videora.
I find the battery life is around 2.0 - 2.5 hrs when using video and will usually recharge after 1.5hrs to ensure enough battery for another 45min episode.
if you are going for a lot of video i would get the larger ipod as once i have all my music on mine i have to shuffle the videos arounda lot. plus the larger one has a better battery life as well0
