SD card vs SDHC card

Hi,

I'm trying to buy an 8gb SD card for a GPS device I've just bought but am having real problems finding one.

Do SDHC cards work in devices that are meant to be SD card only? Do SD cards come in 8gb? Do places even sell them anymore???

SD cards only go up to 4gb
SDHC cards go up to 32gb

An SD card will work in a SDHC device
an SDHC card will not work in a SD device

So.. if your GPS device is not SDHC compatible, the biggest card you can use with it is 4gb

That would explain why I can't find an 8gb SD card then! Strange and annoying this is, it was sold as 'up to 8gb' - not a real problem, just an annoyance

Have you checked in the specifications/manual of your satnav to find out what cards it is capable of ?

I think you will find that cards greater than 2GB are always SDHC, if your satnav only says SD then 2GB is the max.

You do not say if it is new or s/h.

If you have an older TOMTOM then if you update the unit, it could well do the SDHC card, if you have another make, then go to their website and see if it is possible to update.

It's a new sat nav, being delivered tomorrow so I didn't want to buy a card and then have to take it back after finding it doesn't work.

It comes with a 2gb SD card (apparantly) so I might just have to leave it there. It can play music through the car stereo so I was hoping to get a bigger card in there but if it's not having it then so be it
