Can you claim tax credits if you owe a tax bill?

My partner is worried that if we try to claim tax credits they won't give us any or will be 'onto him' in some way because he owes HMRC a tax bill (self employed and not got accounts in order). He is paying the tax bill in bits here and there but does anyone know if this would affect out claim (for child tax credit)?

Not sure of the answer....but I assume that at the moment you are getting no child tax credits or you wouldn't be asking. If by chance, you did qualify, and they did take from it to cover his tax bill...would that not be some assistance to you as in your tax bill would be getting paid off? Or......is he in hiding from them?0

No , your claim for tax credits wont be effected by the fact that your husband has an unpaid tax bill .0
