I do a mixture, I'm in rural parts of northumberland then for some I'm up and down the A1. I've put £80 in since friday, I've done about 700-800 miles.

There's a world of difference between 700 miles and 800 miles. At 800 miles for £80 you're doing just over 55MPG which is probably about right.
  • For that sort of mileage (1000 a week) I would a "proper" service every 6 months, a full service every 12 months, but also have just an oil and oil filter change done every 2 months.

A straight oil and filter change is pretty cheap £40 tops, don't mention the word service! That is a whole different ball park, and a lot more is done.

The type of driving you are doing is actually pretty kind to a car, everything gets nice and hot, and only one cold start a day. But don't neglect the car, get into the habit of thinking of maintenance as a "normal" expense.

You are going to need 1-2 full sets of tyres a year, 4 oil changes, 2 services etc, but if you spend the money, the car should just keep on running.

On the down side it'll be worth very little in 4 years time! not many buyers for 200,000 mile cars (and that's if you've bought new!) silly really as I'd rather have a 200,000 miler that's been looked after, than a 4 yr old 10,000 miler that's never seen a mechanics spanner!
Unless it is damaged or discontinued - ignore any discount of over 25%

Regular servicing, being kind to right foot, keeping tyres inflated, remove excess weight from car (ie, if you've a lot of bits and pieces in the boot, tidy them out), letting the car warm for a short time before driving, driving at correct speed- the optimum for my car is 55mph (same as most), but on the motorway I'd have problems remembering to drive at that!

for a focus diesel, get it serviced every 9000 miles, or 8months based on the fact that you're doing so much mileage.
The tddi engine is supposed to be a really good and long lasting engine, i cant speak for the TDCI engine though (which yours may be...)

    It's 1000 miles a week. Service every 2-3 months.

My job involves using my own car and I do about 800-1000 miles per week. I was in my job 3 month before my last car packed up cos I just drive, put fuel in an hope for the best. I've had my current car 6 months, it's busy getting a full service today and timing belt getting done next month. Any tips to save fuel, keeping the bits ticking over and any other tips just generally to save my car from dying lol.

    Thanks

    oh I have a focus(54) 1.8 diesel on 97k

Properly looked after and assuming there are no major faults aleady present the car shold be good for another 150k easily but regular servicing is the absolute key to keeping things working properly.
  • I used to have a diesel Cavalier with 4,500 mile oil change schedule.

When I took it over at well over 200k, it was on it's third service book, and they'd all been stamped!

    Regards,
    Andy

Word in the trade seems to be to steer clear of the focus TDCi- they are great when working but the injector pumps have a habit of premature failure at £1k a time
  • It might be worth, bearing in mind winter is round the corner, switching all your electric gadgets on at the same time to a, make sure they all work, and b, that the alternator and battery are working well.
