    Yes, but 15m is awfully close if an express rattles through at 100mph. It depends a lot on the line. Definitely a good idea to sit outside for an hour or two before buying.

    The express trains going by are fine. By the time you notice them they are gone. It's the lumbering freight trains that take more than a minute to go by that annoy me the most. They interrupt conversations when in the backyard or on the phone with the window open.

  • If there is a nuisance factor due to noise or vibration it will put people off and the value will take a hit as a result.

    If this isn't a problem and there is a station within a few minutes walk this would probably add to the value.

    I do have a mate though whose parents downsized and bought a flat with a balcony overlooking a railway line. Apparently his Dad loves just sitting there watching trains go past.
