Free kaspersky for a year

I found this on download.com

Kaspersky is said by many to be the very. best anti virus, but expensive, so I downloaded this great freebie.

This is being offered by AOL to ANYONE, you will probably get the odd e-mail asking you to join AOL, as you have to registar your email address, but this seems worth it for this great freebie.

to get this you will need to go to http://www.download.com/downlods & choose software & search AOL virus & click on to AOL active virus shield.

  • Thanks for that, it's just the thought of anything to do with AOL which sends a shiver down the spine
  • To save people searching, here are direct links to the download page:

Note that this is based on Kaspersky AV 6 with some features missing. One of the reviews on download.com lists the differences.
  • All I would say is read the licence agreement at the begining.

  • Sorry to have started a thread & not come back earlier.

Firstly, thank you for direct link, I have now been using for a few days & while I think this is a very good, it does seem Reluctant_S is correct in stateing their are concerns concerning the privacy policy contained in the user agreement. Looking around, whilst I agree the user agreement is iffy, it's possibilities have not been put into effect & most probably won't be, with the threat that it would or could then be classed as spyware, if they did so.

Personally, I think it's a great freebie, but at the same time, I agree the possibilities concerning the user agreement, do also need to be kept an eye on.
  • All I can say is that it's not popularly called AO-Hell for nothing

I think the AO Hell reputation stems from a few years ago when it used to be very difficult to remove their software & cancel the service.

The "offshore" call centres dont help.

Regarding the privicy issue with the e-mail is just a case of setting up a hotmail or gmail account so they can spam it with no effect on you.
  • AOL Hell, came from the early days of the internet, when AOL only allowed those who had signed on for AOL, to go to there chosen websites. AOL has moved on since then.

AOL, may not be the very best, but if you can't get free Sky or TT & you are looking for unlimited downloads, AOL silver is a great option at £9.99 if you phone them, although not available online & connecting through your browser rather than AOL software, is fairly simple.

This is a very good piece of anti virus software which AOL, have. Something I would add though is don't except the taskbar which will stop there advertising/spyware.

Ooops too late! Got the taskbar! Never mind.

I gave a throw away email address to get the registration key.

It uses Kaspersky's standard virus definitions and the same search engine as the full version. It hasn't got Office Guard or any of the other rubbish, but it has some usefull tweaks, such as only check files that are new or have been changed. Considering how many files this rules out it should vastly speed up checking.

Full scan of my laptop took most of last Saturday with NTL's offering. This one took 38 minutes last night.

It's got full email checking and some form of anti-spam, but couldn't work out how to tweak that bit (yet!).

You can set it to download patterns on the usual daily, weekly or whatever basis and similarly with the virus checking.

And if you are running something that needs loads of processing power it automatically pauses download / scan.

    So far, so good!

It's Kaspersky version 5 as far as I'm aware. This is still very good though.

I've used Nod32, Kaspersky 5, 6 and AVG. Kaspersky is a very solid choice, one of the best. Not quite as light as Nod32 or as fast at scanning, but it's said to be better at finding trojans. Well worth trying if it's free.
