Hi
We are going to San Francisco late October for a week
We want try a excursion out of San Francisco
Any ideas where we could go (within reason Set off early and arrive back late and not to expensive) We would like to try going on a train!
One idea is going to Napa?wine valleys any good-but special train with a meal is expensive!
Any other places of interest by train?
How do we book in advance so it will be cheaper then turning up on the day
Thanks in advance
Stephen

You can take a combined train and bus tour to Yosemite but it means an 0630 start and it is a very long day with limited time there. Alternatively for shorter trips by train try Sacramento but be aware for all AMTRAK trains you need to take a connecting bus to the other side of the Bay, Oakland, as they never found a way of crossing the Bay by train0

There is also Caltrain does not involve going to Oakland as it leaves from 4th St. You could go to Stanford University which is good to walk around (Palo Alto station) or Mountain View for a pilgrimage to Google. The train goes on to San Jose which is a pleasant enough town but nothing exceptional.0
