Talktalk sending an engineer unprompted- right to be cynical?

Hi all,
We've just had a call from TT, completely out of the blue, saying that they've had reports of slow speeds, and was it ok to send out an engineer, free of charge, to see if they could improve our service.
I said it was OK to come out on Saturday- but really want to know if anyone has had any experience of this? We're used to lousy speeds as we're quite rural, but we have noticed the connection dropping a lot of late. Does it sound genuine to you guys, or is it likely to be some sort of scam whereby we'll find ourselves unwittingly signed up to CowboyBroadBand.net?
We're a bit baffled as to why the engineer to the house as I always thought these things we're mainly down to the exchange etc. Any thoughts?

I'd be very cautious and make sure you get to see his ID when he arrives and check him out (using a number you get for TT - not one he supplies you with) before you let him into the house.
P.S. I hope you didn't tell the caller that you'd be out every other day just in case their interest is in the other contents of your home rather than the performance of their purported line.My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016).

Normaly BT engineers only come out if theres a broadband fault and not slow speed issues. But they could check things on the line ur main box i suppose.0 -
Agree with the above, check ID and don't sign ANYTHING even if he says it's just proof that he visited you. It's someone else's fault.0

Might be worth calling your ISP to double check this. If not you can then call the police maybe they would like to be there when the person turns up.Survey earnings total 2009 £417, 2010 £875, 2011 £5740

Check his ID, tell him he can connect anything he wants to your phone socket and test that all he wants, but do not - under any circumstances - let him loose on your PC unless you are absolutely, 110% convinced that he's genuine.0

Don't even let him do that unless you are 100% convinced he is legit. He can phone a premium rate number and get your bills up massively.
Best thing to do is phone talk talk and ask them directly.
Be VERY careful this sounds incredibly suspicious. There is not much talk talk can do, they shouldn't even be touching your telephone line.If my post helped you in anyway, please hit the "Thanks" button! Please note any advice I give is followed at your own risk!0 -
Thanks guys- it did immediately ring alarm bells, but his Scots accent was the same lilt all TT people who phone have had. I'll be giving TT a call in the morning to check it out. I didn't give him any details of or movements, not did I give him any reason to suspect that I was suspicious, iykwim.
Thanks again

TT don't have any 'engineers'. Any work on the local loop is done by BT Openreach. No free lunch, and no free laptop
