No 'cooling off' period for insurance - can they do this?

Good evening. I wonder if anyone else has had this problem or know what I can do. A prospective employer contacted an insurance company on my behalf regarding public liability insurance as I need it to work on her premisis as a self employed nail technician. The insurance company called me to check this was ok, that I was willing to take out the policy and asked me a few questions. At NO point did she tell either myself or my new employer that we would be unable to cancel the policy once payment had been taken. I looked at all the documents when they came through and thought that it wasn't such a good deal afterall and knew that after some research I would be able to get a better deal elsewhere so sent a letter recorded to cancel. I've since had an email refering me to t&c's as an attachment of the email (which I did not know about) that I am unable to cancel and get a refund!! Surely this is wrong and that I should have been warned this would be the case - should there not be a cooling off period - should it not suit!! I am so annoyed and just want to cancel it and get my employers money back and find an alternative policy with someone else. I understand most of these deals give you a 14 day period to cancel but this is ridicouls I knew nothing of this clause!!! What do you think I should do - any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
