What are the best performing cheapo nappies?

Hi all.

I am due to have my second baby soon and I'm trying to work out which are the best performing cheap nappies.

With my first I tried all different brands (Tesco's own brand, Pampers, Huggies, Morrisons etc) and found them all quite good so just bought whichever ones were on offer in Tesco's (never tried Sainsbury's or Boots brands).

However, the only ones that I thought were totally rubbish were the "value" brand by Tesco but that was back in 2008. I am wondering if they have improved since then as they were super cheap?

Also, can anyone recommend any really really cheap nappies that they think are good value, whether they are Aldi, Lidl, any weird foreign brands or any deals for bulk buying in places like Costco?

Before anyone suggests - reusable nappies are not an option as they are totally impractical for our housing situation.

Thanks!

  • I found Asda own brand good for newborn but only found Pampers to be any good once the baby was on the move. HTH.
  • I use Tesco own brand and they are great. I have only had one poo leakage in three months, and that was because he did three days worth of poo on the sly. Boots own are fine but the size seems a little on the mean side. My boy is quite big and well over the 13lb size two allow for, but in tesco nappies he still has room to grow. In boots nappies he was out if size two just after he was newborn. A smaller size and more nappies for your money!

They don't do newborns but I swear by Lidls. They are far superior to Pampers/Huggies.

I use Boots own brand and have never had any problem. Handy for building up advantage card points too and usually works out pretty cheap if you use your coupons well. For instance the other week I used £5 off a £15 spend on baby so stocked up on nappies and wipes - own brand nappies are often on a 3 packs for £10 offer so made an additional saving there. I make sure I buy my nappy and wipes supply monthly like this as it works out cheaper and the points build up quickly to be used at Christmas or in January sales.

Depends on the size and shape of your baby, in my experience.

We used to use Tesco own brand cheapy ones, but then they changed the design and they leaked all over the place.

So we switched to Sainsbury own brand and all fine since then.

My advice would be to start at the cheapest and work your way up till you find one that does the job for your shape baby.
  • Lidls nappies are really good. My two are both in them. No nappy rash/leaks/tight marks etc

I think you will need to try them on your baby as they all differ in size and fit personally my bubs didnt get on with tesco's own brand at all but i found the boots ones were as good as the pampers for him. Keep an eye out in boots as well i'm not sure whats been going on or if its just local to my boots but they have been selling off some of the pampers nappies at very cheap prices but its normally only one size and you really have to look for them. I managed to get 3 packs of pampers size 2's for my new babs for £2.25 each and they were the large packs as well that are normally £10 each :-)

  • Lidl's ones are pretty good for older babies; Tesco own ones are good too, especially the ones in the purple packs

I used aldi and terry nappies. TO be honest when they are small terry nappies are so easy. There are a few different ways of folding terry nappies I think the site which was helpful for me was the nappy lady. Invest in a couple or three good nappy wraps. If you have a washing machine and tumble dryer it is so easy. Most of it gets flushed down the loo with the liner. If you are nervous you can take disposables when you go out. I did use aldi when she got bigger they were fine. I found when they are bigger and my child was a wriggler it is harder to chase them round a room with a terry nappy...

My advice would be not to stock up on too many! My eldest 2 were fine on own brand nappies, yet my 3rd has a reaction to every brand other than Pampers! She was ok with Huggies for a while, but sure enough, back came the thrush :(. I also think it depends on what sex the baby is too ;) Good luck with the impending birth! xx
