Maternity pay help please...

Hi,
I am due to go on maternity leave in November and have just found out that my employer is going to pay me 90% of my pay for 16 weeks (instead of the usual 6 weeks) and then the normal maternity may of £124.?? a week for the next 23 weeks.
My question is do I request to be paid equal amounts over the 9 months off? eg the total of 16 weeks @ 90% plus 23 @ smp divided by 9 months = monthly pay? or have the 16 weeks @ 90% then move on to the much lower rate?
The thing I am concerned about is will this affect tax etc? or claiming working tax credits? (not currently claimed)
I would really appreciate some feedback
