Help for the disabled at The Lighthouse in Poole

I'm not sure if this is the right forum or heading for this subject, but here goes.

At The Lighthouse Arts Centre in Poole they have accessible stuff etc for deaf, partially sighted etc etc etc and it is brilliant for me, but I have heard rumours that it will be stopped if not used (Apparently not enough people know about it, so I'm telling the world so I don't lose out on it) and others get to know about it before it's too late.

I suppose you don't actually have to be disabled to use it as my Dad (Who is 82 and slightly deaf) uses it.

I'm not totally up on the Disability Discrimination Act. There is a chance though that by removing these facilities they could be going against the act. It could be worth contacting someone to find out.

Yes it would be. Unless (can't think of anything off the top of my head) they can justify it.

  • I have just been made aware of this thread and I work for Lighthouse and can confirm that there are absolutely no plans to stop the service.

The captioning and audio described performances have only been in operation a few months but have already proved very popular, particularly with last year's panto, Jack & The Beanstalk, and The 39 Steps and Columbo: Prescription Murder this year.

However, we're always looking for new ways to encourage more people to use the facilities, so any tips or links to local resources etc. would be appreciated.

We will be doing captioned and audio described performances for Alan Ayckbourn's 'Bedroom Farce' on Sept 23rd and 25th, 'Romeo & Juliet' on November 4th & 6th and also for panto in December/January, which is Peter Pan this year with Debra Stephenson (Bad Girls, Corrie, The Impressions Show).

Please go to our website for more details but I hoped that's reassured you?

    Thank God for that :beer::beer::beer::beer::beer:
  • This is just some info. that I have received from The Lighthouse which might explain things a bit better, as I'm no good at that sort of thing.

ALL ABOUT AUDIO DESCRIBED AND CAPTIONED PERFORMANCES AT LIGHTHOUSE

    What is Audio Description?

Audio description in theatre is a live verbal commentary providing information on the visual elements of a production as it unfolds. From sets, props and costumes, to actors’ facial expressions and movements across the stage; the description is delivered during the quieter moments of a performance. It gives only essential information that a visually impaired (VI) might miss. The audio description is delivered via headsets. At Lighthouse, we also try to arrange a touch tour of the set before the performance starts.
TOUCH TOUR: Touch tours allow customers to make a closer examination of the set, furniture, props, costumes and wigs. Sometimes members of the cast will participate, sometimes in costume. This is a way to get familiar with the voice of the actor and the voice of the character they are playing. Box office will advise if a touch tour is taking place prior to an Audio Described show and what time this will take place when you book your tickets.

    What is Captioning?

Captioning is similar to television subtitling and gives deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people access to live performances.

Captioning converts the spoken word into text, which is displayed on a caption unit, or units, situated on or next to the stage. As well as dialogue, the captions also include the name of the character who is speaking or singing and descriptions of any sound effects.

AUDIO DESCRIBED AND CAPTIONED PERFORMANCES AT LIGHTHOUSE: WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW!

Seats will be allocated by Lighthouse Box Office for both Audio Described and Captioned performances. These seats will be in the most appropriate positions to either have clear sight of the caption unit or receive clear reception for the Audio Describing.
If a touch tour is scheduled, Box Office will advise where to assemble and what time to arrive. Lighthouse website online booking system does not allow booking for the assisted shows. This is to ensure that individuals wanting to access the Audio Describing or Captioning are identified and placed in the most appropriate seats. In addition, other audience members need to be made aware that Captioning or Audio Describing is taking place.
Lighthouse Box Office and front of house staff are trained and happy to welcome and assist anyone attending a Captioned or Audio Described show. Lighthouse staff will provide assistance to seats, headset collection and ticket collection. In addition, staff will ensure operation and comfort of the headsets as well as checking reception before the start of the show.

Lighthouse is accessible to people with disabilities. There is lift access to all levels, our auditoria have sound enhancement systems and we offer concessions through the Access to Leisure and Learning scheme.
