Over-refund Loophole at Tesco

When shopping online at Tesco I sometimes mis-click and order the wrong quantities, meaning that I have to return some items to the driver. When I eventually got around to checking my credit card statements I discovered that the refunds for the returned items were higher than expected. Digging deeper, it turns out that if the items are BOGOF, meal deal or multi-buy then they refund the full retail price and not the discounted price that you pay.
Result: Meal deal paid £9 , returned to driver. refunded £18.
or ordered 6 bottles of wine on a wine deal, I only wanted 3 so I gave 3 back, and ended up paying about £0.15 for the 3 bottles that I kept.

I have told the driver about this and he says it happens all the time!
Anybody else had a similar experience? What did you do?

  • It's the same with Sainsbury's. It's happened to me a few times. In fact, I contacted their customer services about it as I was concerned about the amounts they were over-refunding me. No-one there seemed at all interested and it took them a couple of weeks before I even got a response.

They told me that they know about the problem, but they aren't doing (or can't do) anything about it at the moment. They weren't concerned about the over-refund and said I didn't need to be.

It seems crazy to me, but if they aren't bothered about it, why should I be?
  • OMG! That is soooo weird.
Maybe both companies bought their computer program from the same supplier. :D

I've had this experience too. About a month ago I bought 2 melons that were £2.00 each or 2 for £2.50. When they arrived they were overripe and starting to go brown and I told the driver I didn't want them as they wouldn't last. He agreed and I got a refund back of £4. The driver said I could keep them anyway. Needless to say they were delicious !
Still virtually alcohol free since 4/1/15. (10 Xmas/ New Year/Birthday drinks)
It takes 3500 calories to lose a pound in weight. Target 13 lbs weight loss. 18.5lbs lost 2nd May - 28 September.
  • Which supermarket was that?

as weird as two different people signing up on MSE at the same time and (never having posted before) managing to find/start a thread about this and comment to each other....weird.;)

What did I do? I didn't come on to MSE and tell thousands of people some of which will take the P then causing the supermarket to fix the mistake..... BTW it's rare for it to happen. It only happened for me on substitutes which were totally inappropriate. I wouldn't go and buy more of a product then return it. Check the quantities before you send the order....
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • I can assure you, HappyMJ; it is not a rare occurrence.
  • I stumbled across this glitch when I returned some unsuitable substitutions and the refund was much larger than expected. That was back in springtime. I've now spoken to one of their drivers, and although he didn't know about it, he says he now realises why some of his customers are regularly returning many products. I'm surprised it hasn't been fixed yet, this must have been going on for years.

It is the way the refund systems work, it is the same in store unless the assistant manually changes the refund amount.
