Vegetalbe/fruit identification please

I have been given a few of these free by my dad who was given them by another friend!

He was told that they go very well with tomatoes as a ratatouille etc and my dad called them tomatins?!? He's gone away now so I can't re-ask him!!

Anyway on googling tomatins I could find nothing about them, shape and size is very much like a tomato they are more or a yellowy green colour and apparently taste slightly spicier, they have a flower type leafy covering over them which you have to take off to get to the 'tomatin'.
Sorry not the best explanation but not seen them myself before.
Can post a photo later if my explanation is not good enough
Thanks to anyone that does have any idea though

Take care Chella, in the event it is the tomato like fruit of the POTATO. Poisonous.
Google says Tomatins is a bacterial agent from the tomato plant.

I've never been able to get any tomatillos, so I don't know about cooking with them (jealous smiley)

I have to go out shortly, but if no-one's posted any recipes by the time I get back, I'll see if I can find any :)

EDIT ... they're used in the classic Mexican salsa verde

I'm sure there must be other things you can do with them that don't involve Mexican food

    tomatilla pasta sauce recipe HERE

I've got a book with a lamb shanks in tomatilla sauce recipe, it sounds interesting, but uses a lot of unusual Mexican ingredients which would make it expensive if you don't have them in the storecupboard
