Laptop Scrapyard for spare parts?

Options
Hi, I'm just about to go off to uni to start my Masters, and after the trouble I'm going to to raise money for it my laptop decides it wants to cost me money!

Put simply, the screen/hinge assembly is broken, so it still works but needs to be fixed before it gets any worse and the laptop really suffers.

I'm being quoted a lot of money to fix the computer, as they have to look for the parts in distribution centres across europe and it could easily cost £200+.

Just wondering if anyone knows of any laptop graveyards/scrapyards where I could pick up a very similar laptop and nick the bits off it to save money?

Any help will be greatly received! I've got 2 weeks to have this little nightmare sorted as the laptop will be invaluable to me at uni!!

the usual place would be ebay, look for the ones that state for spares or repair :D
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

Did you actually think to mention which make and model of machine the part should fit?? I think you need to think seriously about that Masters. ;)

Have you ever taken a laptop apart? If not, you will need a service manual (or instructions from the internet) on how to do it. Google will help.
  • ok all in one go, the laptop itself is currently with a repair shop, so i'd like to be able to supply the parts myself for them to do the parts exchange. though how hard can it be to assemble anyway? (famous last words....)

..for the record, i'm doing an engineering masters and am pretty technically capable. Unless you need jeweller sized tools I think I could do it if I needed to.

and finally, the laptop itself is an Acer 7620G, so looking for parts from any extensa laptop with a 17" screen from the 7620 series.

oh and unfortunately ebay and a local trading newspaper has so far given no results :(

I charge a flat one hour rate plus parts for hinges. You can usually get used and new hinges from Ebay for around £10-£40. Even from the manufacturer, they shouldn't be more than £40 or so. I would expect a shop to charge no more than £80 to do the repair.

I've sourced acer parts from this acer specialist...based in Ireland, but gave me great service on bits I couldn't find on ebay - if you don't see it listed on the website, give them a call, they're really helpful peeps :)
