How many hours is fulltome education?

My brother is 16 and about to start a college course 9-5 for 2 days a week, he gets an hour a day for lunch. Is this classed as full time or kart time for child benefit and tax credit and child maintanence ? My mum is wondering if she will lose her benefits? Thanks

The college will be able to confirm if the course is considered full time or part time. I'm not sure whether or not there is a fixed threshold in terms of hours.

Will your brother qualify for EMA or a college bursary? Is he planning to seek part time work with the remaining 5 days left across the week? If so, he can contribute towards his keep and offset the household expenses.

    Is your mother in employment?

yes he is looking for work hopefully my other brothers employer will be giving him a few hours work.

Mum is unemployed but due to start a new job in 2 weeks as the younger kids will be at school and dad works as a nurse full time. I think they worked out my brother should get about £10 ema but this may depend on whether mum keeps the tax credits ?

As he is about to do a college course some colleges may class his study as full time however as he is a minor he will be able to apply for ema allowance on his own. This does not affect benefits.Child benefit is paid until the child turns 18. Tax credits are assessed on family income and ages of all children taking into account nursery/ registered childcare costs. Many families would still be entitled to tax credit (working tax credit for those who work at least 30 hours a week and tax credit for each child regardless). maintenance payments are sometimes affected but this may have changed. seek advice from working mums website (google working mums) or phone/google inland revenue website and give them a scenario. As your mother is about to start work she may be entitled to additional amount for housing benefit /council tax.Make sure she applies at the housing department/customer services department if in local authority housing.

If she recieved the job whilst being registered as jobless eg income support/jsa she could also recieve money for clothing and to ask at her local jobcentre plus to apply as they do not openly tell you.
