Check SD card for corruption

A friend of my wife found that all the items on her SD card had vanished, but she neither recalls deleting them nor formatting the card.

I have recovered them using Recuva, but when I first tried to open the card to view the files, there was a message that the card may have been corrupted.

When sending her a DVD-R of the recovered files, I would like to be able to advise her if the card is suitable for reuse.

Can anyone tell me how I might do this without cost? Thanks in anticipation.

  • If you have fully recovered the files, just reformat the SD card and see if its OK. Someone may have deleted the files, passed through a scanner, sat on it, overheated it in sunshine or a sun spot could have damaged it, even removing it from a PC might do the same. Advise safe withdrawal. Might be a clone SD 4Gb sold as 8Gb on ebay.
  • Re format the card one it has been fully recovered. Spend a little while testing it, drag and drop a couple of files, and lift off again etc to be sure it appeasr ok.

I would say though that with SD Cards starting at £5 (and TESCO doing 3 for 2) is it really essential she takes the risk of losing data again on this specific card?
Marry a Foreigner, its so much cheaper!
