Argos - Is this right?

Hi. I wondered if anyone could tell me if this is right please.

I bought a cabin bed and mattress from Argos (online), which was delivered 13/08/10. The bed was for my daughter and the mattress was for my son. I bought it this way because if you buy the 2 items together you get a small discount (£10-£20). Anyway the mattress is shocking quality, you can feel every spring digging into your back!

I phoned Argos 21/08/10 to tell them and ask to return the item for a refund. The man told me that because I had bought the 2 items together, as a package, if I wanted a refund I would need to return both the bed and mattress. I assured him that the bed was fine and did not need returning. He said the only other option was to exchange the mattress. However the one I had was worth £60 (one of the lowest priced ones they sell). He said I would need to look in the catalogue, choose another mattress and pay the difference; then they would swap it.

I explained that I didn't have the money to pay extra. Also with this one being so bad, how did I know what the replacement would be like! I was told this is my only option, if I didn't want to return the bed as well.

Can they do this?

Many Thanks

Were the items bought as a package or as two single items?

If it were a package you would have to reject the whole thing rather than just one part.
  • If the OP grouped them together like i think it describes then yes its a full return.

You can always buy the cabin bed again but what a kerfuffle!

Have thou offered to refund the group discount you got as you are trying to go back on the original deal (contract) they may let you return it if you remove the original group deal.
Marry a Foreigner, its so much cheaper!
  • They are saying that I bought it at a package price and yes I only used 1 order number.

The problem is the bed took 1 day to put together and is in a box room, therefore almost impossible to get out.

I'm afraid with a company like Argos you will be very lucky to get them to budge on this one, unless you can speak to someone senior. So ask to speak to a manager in customer service to explain the situation.

As a general rule never buy mattresses from Argos, as they don't sell good quality ones. The mattress you bought would be worth nearer £30, and not the £60 they sell it for.

Can you return the mattress on its own for a credit note refund? (Either with or without the discount taken into account.) What if you tried returning the mattress without a receipt?

Can you buy a second bed on its own and then return this second bed and the mattress for a refund of the original purchase as though it was the original purchase? Obviously you'd lose the discount, but I'm not sure you can expect much better than that.

No Argos will only accept the whole bundle as it was sold as a bundle.

You can't return it without a receipt as you must have proof of purchase.

But by following my second suggestion, it would be being returned as a bundle. With a receipt.

The OP doesn't want to return the whole bundle because the bed has been assembled in a small box room.

The suggestion by JimmyTheWig was to buy a bed on its own and then return the new bed with the mattress for a refund, hence leaving the first one still in the bedroom.

That is a possibility as long as items don't have individual bar codes, in which case it wouldn't work.
