What should we ask Staples to do?

My friend purchased a laptop from Staples last week. This evening, my husband went to her house to help her set it up as she was struggling to get it up and running.
She needed it urgently to do some research for a new job she is taking on in 10 days time, so obviously not bein able to use the laptop properly has "cost" her about four days worth of research.
The laptop has got office 2007 on it, but Staples have given her a key for office 2010. Obviously the two are incompatible.
I am going to accompany her back to Staples tomorrow to try and sort it out, but what should we expect Staples to offer her? An upgrade to Office to the 2010 version rather than the 2007 that is loaded, or should they only be expected to give her a key for 2007?

Couldn't you just install the version of the one you have a key for?0

Bingo
However, in response to the question raised in the title. I think you should ask them to do the Thriller dance.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

Why could OpenOffice not be used in the mean time or even WordPad which comes included with Windows (or Google Docs or any other number of free solutions). Then it wouldn't have cost her any days of research before the problem can be resolved.0 -
I'd say it's a good thing to have the key for 2010 rather that 2007.
You can download 2010 from Microsoft and use the key as Esqui said, but forget the Thriller dance bit.0 -
But then the trip to Staples would be wasted

Securely bind sheets of paper, card etc. Anything else is simply outside their job description."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0

I'm a little confused. Normally MS Office is not part of a laptop desktop package and has to be bought separately. You will sometimes have a trial version on a machine.
If Staples have sold your friend MS Office then they should also have a copy of the media to install it.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Not so. Several software packages now only have a product key to install the software, and it must be downloaded from the internet. All cost saving, I should imagine.
You can obviously get disks, but it does vary depending on where you go as to what you'll be provided with.Any advice or opinion is only informal advice to the best of my knowledge. Just covering my back, yadda yadda.0 -
With the advent of Netbooks (personally I hate these slow, cheap, underpowered things but whatever) a huge amount of PCs now have no DVD drive.
As such, the only way to get software onto them is either to supply it on a USB stick (too costly), install it via another computer on your home network (not everyone HAS a 2nd PC) or offer it for download via the internet, hence software such as Norton and Office is now commonly sold without physical media, indeed it is cheaper to buy office as just a key.
All you have to do is download the Office 2010 trial and your Office 2010 key will work with it.
Office 2007 is discontinued, Staples could not have given you a key for it if they had wanted to.
The Office 2007 install on the laptop will be a 60 day trial and will have been working fine up to now, so she shouldn't have lost any time.0
