Can I run two PC'c of one broadband connection

I am about to sign up with Virgin Broadband, but would like to ask some questions first.

I have 2 PC's in the house, my own and my sons, does one broadband connection cover both or do I need 2 modems.

The Virgin contract is for £14.99 per month and there is no 12 month tie in. They say they can provide me with 1meg service altough my search with them indicates I can get up yo 4 meg. Forgive me if I have not used the correct terms. There is also a 3 Gb download limit per month.

I hope I have not confused anybody and any advice is gratefully received.

  • Yes, you can. Virgin offer a quite good wireless modem router which lets you connect up to 4 PCs using cables and obviously wirelessly for any laptop(s). Here's what you get: http://www.virgin.net/customers/broadbandhelp/Installation/whatis/whatdoi.html Don't know if it's limited to certain contracts. If it is, there's nothing to stop you buying your own modem/router but you obviously don't get Virgin's assistance in setting it up.
  • You need an ADSL modem / Router. You can't use two modems on one phone line

    Hi
It all depends on what you are going to be using the internet for, but 3gbs a month download limit is pretty low, unless all your going to be doing is browsing, email etc.

Also Virgin charge you if you cancel within the first 12mths,

    Taken from their website:
Cancellation charge:: For customers ordering the Service on or after June 7th 2005, Virgin.net reserves the right to charge you a cancellation fee of £50.00 (fifty pounds) if you cancel your Virgin.net Broadband account within 12 months of the date your Broadband Service was activated.

As per previous post, you can have quite a few pc's sharing the same broadband connection.
I have a wireless setup at home which can be (and has been) used by 4 desktop pcs and 2 laptops at the same time.

Not ideal if downloading lots of music, etc, but no problems with general surfing, email etc.
  • we have a pc upstairs and also a laptop, we just bought a wireless router and set it up ourselves, dead simple! just make sure it is compatible, i.e. either for cable broadband or other types. our router was about £50 I think, it is a lynksys one and we have had no probs with it at all, even after switching it off for 2 weeks when on holiday, just make sure that you set up security so no one in your street can piggy back from your broadband.

I have 4 pcs connected via network cards, (not wireless). I have them all running fine from Broadband of 10meg, My main pc acts as the server, so the only flaw I have is to ensure the main pc is running in order to allow the other 3 access to the internet, I limit the d/l rate to each one to share it as fairly as possible. however the main pc gets the highest d/l.....because its mine ;)

  • At work, I have about 280 PC's running off a 2Mb ADSL line. And, yes it works just fine though we do have a local cache

I have 5 or 6 omputers running sometimes on my basic 1 mb broadband.

I use wireless and we have an extra access point because of the position of my office compared to the router but you should have no issues running two pc's off your connection as long as you have a router.
