They could certainly get a slapped wrist for false advertising if they continually had offers/prices that were genuinely misleading but you cannot force a shop to sell you anything. Hence they could refuse to sell to anyone that wasn't wearing a purple hat if they so chose.
I am not here to give anyone a hard time, I am just here to clarify your original point that alluded to the fact you should receive a reason as to why a shop would not sell you something or allow you to take up an offer. You have no legal entitlement to any good that a shop owns, when you buy something you make them an offer to purchase it from them. They have the ability to reject without giving a reason.
We've seen on a number of threads you being confused between "Consumer Rights" and "Consumer Wants".
Of course a shop can refuse to sell any item to you, but they can't falsely advertise.0 -

Thanks everyone for your comments. It wasnt a question of being picky over a trivial thing, it was a principle. Anyway an email was sent and we got 500 advantage points as a goodwill gesture.0
