Self Build Extension (insurance?)

Not sure if I should post here or in the insurance bit, (I have looked in both places and can't see anything relevant in either).
We are just about to start renovating and extending our new house, not living in it yet, got sub contractors for electrics, plumbing, brickie, and groundwork, but as hubby is a joiner he is doing the rest himself, our insurers (AA) want copies of our builders insuance docs, (subbies have given us theirs)so we have had to look for insurance to cover ourselves - like a self build I suppose, the quotes seem to be coming in at about £1000, which we could really do without, but don't want to run the risk of doing it without proper cover.
Has anyone else been in a similar situation and what did you do?
