White bread versus brown

Options
On another forum we're having a discussion about school packed lunches, again and someone has said to me "nothing wrong with white bread, it contains more calcium than brown"

Is that true? Is it better to get calcium from milk and fibre from wholemeal bread? Just a little confused about this.

So in answer to the calcium issue, although white bread does provide more calcium if my kids get their calcium from milk then they can get the fibre, iron and zinc from wholemeal bread (that white doesnt provide)?

Brown bread is made with white flour dyed brown.

What you should eat is wholemeal bread.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Since my days of working in a flour mill and seeing the array of chemicals added to white flour, I've always eaten wholemeal bread.;)

Wheatgerm is tasty and has a high protein content.............but is removed from wheat to make white flour.

You can keep your calcium carbonate and iron filings thanks, I'll stick to wholemeal bread.

  • I did a healthy family eating course at my son's school recently and was told that white bread has hardly any nutirional value and just acts as a glue inside our bodies.
Wholemeal is by far the best option.

  • As the others have pointed out it's Wholemeal bread you should be eating see You will see from calcium: foodsources that there are plenty of other ways to ensure you get sufficient calcium. The extra benefits of eating wholegrain foods are so numerous I think all refined foods should be taxed and supermarkets prevented from offering bogoff's and other promotions on unhealthy refined foodstuffs.

Thanks Ted for those links, it was as I had thought then, I can calm down now lol. Its just that someome had replied to me that I shouldnt knock white bread as it had more calcium than wholemeal and I hadnt heard that before. After reading different links I feel that how we eat is right but it did knock me off my spot a bit lol

yes hollydays, flour starts off brown but the wheatgerm is taken out and then the flour bleached for white bread.
'Brown' bread is white bread dyed brown.
'wholemeal' is bread with the wheatgerm left in.

    Wholemeal bread is healthier.

We must not, in trying to think about how we can make a big difference, ignore the small daily differences we can make which, over time, add up to big differences that we often cannot foresee.
