recently bought a 205 1.9gti that has not been run since 2002 i have currently got cylinder head off to change gasket and valve seals etc.
the problem i have is the water/coolant has got some jelly type gunge in it.i have cleaned as much away as possible when removing water pump, head and stat housing also put in a new radiator.
is there anything i can put in the cooling system for a few hours running to break down the remainder before flushing out and filling with anti freeze? a bit like what you do with central heating in the house.

Not much you can do other than periodically flush it out completely. When you pop it all back together, does the top radiator hose go into the cylinder head(or thermostat housing on head) at the engine end or the waterpump? If it goes through the cylinderhead first, just leave the water pump off and leave a hose running through it for a few hours.

Agree'd on the hose thing BUT

MAKE SURE THE ENGINE IS VERY COLD BEFORE YOU DO!!!

the top hose goes to stat housing gearbox end of head, rather than leaving pump out there is a water housing on rear of block by waterpump that has a block drain plug on it,so can use that.
  • Dishwaher tablet.

Run it round the block a few times with one in the expansion tank, then drop it all out.

Never fails. A "Trade secret" if you will.

I just thought there would be a chemical you could chuck in to break the crap down,I work on trains and when we have oil coolers fail that put oil in coolant we stick in a product called travik to get rid of oil.did not want to use this in pug as engine is not all cast like trains so unsure if it would be safe.
Never heard of dishwasher tablet trick before but done some googling and it would seem it is a well used practice to clean the crap out just needs to be crumbled up first.thanks for the info I shall give it a go when ready to run engine again.

The jelly though has been caused by mixing incompatible anti-freeze mixes, remember to chuck out the old can sitting in the garage!
