I would add one word of caution regarding the devices that emit a sound that "humans can't hear", adults may not be able to hear them but youngsters can!!
My sister had the same problem as you and resorted to one of these devices, we visited her and were eating out in her garden and my son was being driven to distraction by a noise, which us 'oldies' couldn't hear(he was 14 at the time) When she switched the cat device off he couldn't hear the noise anymore!!
It did work up to that point by keeping the cats out, however she discontinued it's use because it was apparent that it could be heard by younger people and her oldest was only two years old.

That's interesting - where can I get one - to keep 'kids' at bay!? Only snag - love cats.

  • I am the only person in the street of 9 houses without a cat (I am allergic to them so cannot get one). So why is it that the cats only sh*t in my garden?

Because you haven't got a cat. Cats are territorial and your garden is neutral territory.

If you weren't allergic, I'd say get a cat yourself.

    Failing that, a water-pistol.

I heard lion poo or getting an adult man to pee around edges works as a good deterrant (note I heard this I don't know for sure never having tested it!)
  • Could you get a dog? big angry one? I have two cats BTW, British Short Hair, Purrrrrrrfect.
Marry a Foreigner, its so much cheaper!
  • we used to use a saline aerosol spray on ours to stop scratching etc, they hated the sound it makes when it sprays as much as the actual water. Very quickly they learnt that and even just popping the lid would have them scatter.

  • What do you expect the neighbours do?
Cats go outside and they need to do their business and their owners cant train cats the way a dog can be trained.

You cant put a cat on a lead and take it for a walk.....so what can a cat owner do in your opinion?

I do know one thing.......it isnt the cats fault. Threatening to hurt the cat is a disgracful way to behave and so is threatening to put cats do'ings through a neighbours letterbox.

    Get some citronella or something.

Cat owners are always happy for their cats to drop their sh*t on everyone elses gardens but their own.

Are you happy for a 2 year old to get disease from cat faeces? I am not saying it will happen but it could.

If I hadn't read the ideas offered by the people on this board I am guessing I would have placed raxor wire on my fences as a burglar deterrent and of course a cat deterrent.

I have taken on board peoples suggestions and gone for the citrus and pepper option to see how things go.

Thank you to all who have made suggestions. Like I said I am a lot calmer now than at the time I wrote the original post
  • Razor wire?????? What a horrible suggestion. Hope your fence is high enough for people or children not to reach it if walking past. I'm swure all responsable cat owners are not happy for their cat to "drop their sh*t on everyone elses gardens but their own" it's just as annoying as 2 year olds misbehaving LOL

I totally understand ops frustration but equally understand that there really isn't anything that cat owners themselves can realistically do. There are several cats that use my front garden as their toilet.

If you child goes play in the garden just make sure hands are thoroughly washed(which I know you will do)
fil was a keen gardener and he did have medical problems in relation to cats faeces !
  • Seikothrill....I do feel for you and know it must be frustrating. I am a multiple cat owner myself, and while I make efforts to encourage my gang to poop in my own garden I know realistically that they must also go elsewhere.
Just to even out the arguments though.....Remember that we all impact on our neighbours in some way, even if we think we do not. For example...I am at home suffering from a migraine now and would love nothing more than to lie down and sleep it off....Unfortunately the little 2 year old next door is having a temper tantrum and screaming the house down. This is after she has spent the last hour stamping up and down the laminate floored hallway and banging her toys on the wall.
Now, this is just what 2 year olds do...I know that, it doesn't make her or her babysitting grandma evil and deserving of punishment...so remember we all need to be tolerant of others.
