To my knowledge there's no such thing as an open-ended contract. Generally, it would be for a fixed-term of say 6 or 12 months.
Sorry, B&T but it *is* possible to have an open ended rental contract

However, OP - might it be that you originally did have fixed term, which then went on to a month by month tenancy, called a Statutory Periodic Tenancy?
  • The OP stated in their first post that they'd been in the property "nearly six months now" so they can't be on a periodic yet, unless the rules are different in NI. Carelessly I overlooked that statement when I asked how long they'd been in the property.

In the OP's position I would still be making urgent preparations for my onward move just in case

seems we both did ;) However, that does not alter the fact that is possible to have an open ended tenancy agreement.

OP - you should have been given a rent book with specific information in it (Private Tenancies (Northern Ireland) Order 2006) and if this didn't happen within 28 days then your LL has committed an offence. As your tenancy started after Apr 2007 you are also entitled to have a statement of tenancy (Tenancy Terms Regulations (NI) 2007)

OP, sorry to here you are in this situation.

As this is a secured loan, it is not like a mortgage where the lender may have agreed to the property being let to tenants. AFAIK there is no mechanism for approval to let a property for a secured loan. If it does get to court, the judge may look at the date the secured loan was taken - if the tenancy pre-dates the loan it may be that your rights take priority (which begs the question of the value of securing a loan if the property is tenanted).
