Magnolia Tree

I bought a magnolia tree from B&Q at the weekend. It was £1 in the clearance section.
It looks healthy and has plenty green shoots, although something had been eating lots of them.
I have put it in a bigger pot and used the compost they recommended.

I know they flower in the spring and that the flowers came first before the shoots. Why all the green shoots now? Does anyone own one and what is it doing at this time of year.
Really love magnolia so hope it survives

I have a really established one in my garden. I love it but not all the cleanup of the blossom! It at the moment has green shoots which then go sort of grey and furry in the winter and then finally in the spring the blossom comes out and smells lovely. Enjoy your tree!

Depending on what sort it is, they're not really designed for pots as they grow too big. My magnolia stellata although it said dwarf on the label still has a height of 3m and spread of 4m when fully grown. It's been in a large pot the last couple of years and I'm trying to keep it manageable by pruning, but the roots grew through the bottom of the pot and into the ground so I'm not sure how much longer it'll be happy in its pot.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
