Freeholder problems

We bought a lease hold flat in 2001.

During the yearly years we often asked the freeholder for our yearly buildings insurance and ground rents bill but he never invoiced us for them.

In 2008 he got in touch and asked for payments due on 2006 and 2007 (not the years before).

He has now come back and asking for the earlier years saying we should be lucky he is not asking for interest too.

We are happy to pay him the money but I just wondered where people think we stand on all this?

    Others will correct if wrong but I think he can only back bill for the last 6 years. Beyond this anything is statute barred and is not enforceable.
