It looks like the mini fan is quite a complex system (like almost everything on that car). The fan has electrics on board which can be by-passed so that the fan will run but will not operate correctly. This seems quite a common problem so I suggest you find a local independant mini specialist as they can do fixes without replacing the whole fan assembly. The fan still needs to be removed to do this which, like almost anything on the mini, is a total PITA.

oh and he's charging me £200 for the fan + £280 labour for 4 hours... Said its bloody difficult to reach and they've got to literally take the front of the car off.. Bumper etc..
  • The mechanic phoned me up today and told me that a new problem has arisen - he put the new fan in and apparently it was working fine and he told me to come and collect.

The I just received a call, after about an hour of hearing the good news and he's told me that now the fan WON'T switch off!!

Brand new fan from BMW and whole different problem :(!

He reckons it's a thermostat issue, but said the diagnostic tools they're using did NOT detect any thermostatic issues beforehand...

What could it be?? Any ideas?

    Thanks :(

I hope he got the correct fan, there are several versions.

    edit

OP has posted on one of those and has been given much the same answer as mine above ( if you fit the wrong fan it runs all the time, the parts that fail have been removed from the fan assembly and put on board the car on later versions). The problem with the mini is that it often needs expert attention as it is a complex illogical PITA to work on.
