If it is just your house check your fuse box to see if it has tripped if and check your electricity meter as well if problem at fuse box call an electrician or your landlord to arrange for one, if your meter call your electricity supplier.

If it is more than just your property then you need to call the local electricity distribution company, its name and number can be found in the information pages in the front of your local telephone book.

There is NO national electricity emergency number that I am aware of and the gas emergency service does not deal with anything electrical nor does it have the contact numbers so will not be able to assist,

You can find the numbers here

Good information. You know the only time it would be useful is in the rare event of a power cut when I would need power to use the computer, the broadband to search for it and the phone to make the call all of which wouldn't work. Should I get a laptop with mobile broadband and a fully charged mobile just in case or do I just let the neighbours sort it or wait until someone in the control room at the network detects a power outage and sends someone around to check it out?

Or you could write down the number now and stick it on/by your electricity meter.
Stick the gas one by your gas meter too (0800 111 999).

Trouble is many phones won't function in a power cut. Only simple ones without a power supply. None of the cordless type.Best use your mobile.

Personally when you get a power cut/interruption the first thing I'd suggest doing is run around turning off AND unplugging anything in the 'expensive electronic' item category (TV, stereo, PC, Laptop, satellite box/PVR) even if you have proper surge protectors the mains supply comming back up is the point they're most at risk of some form of surge and getting damaged.....

Good post, information like this should be on a sticky. I notice the FAQ sticky is 5 years old and has never had anything else added to it, could be a good place to put it....as well as some stock answers to the FAQ's often asked by posters...just a thought.

I'd never call an 08 number from a mobile at 40p/minute does anyone have the geographical 01/02 numbers which can be called using inclusive minutes from the mobile?

  • Lemontart some useful info, you are correct their is no "emergency number" like GT, the local DNO are the only equivalent.

What to do if you property has no power?

If it is just your property, Check your fuses and trips. if they are okay, is their a red light on the meter? if their is no red light contact your local DNO.

if their is a red light contact the supplier who need to get their MO to either de-program or exchange the meter.

What to do if you smell burning or see sparking at the meter

Contact your DNO, who will attend to pull your fuse. and make the situation safe.
