  • Offer to drive everywhere, no matter how scary the thought, even the middle of London. You'll soon be a natural.

    What Shoe Gal said.

Not quite so sure about volunteering for scary stuff though - depends if you think it would be good for you or might knock your confidence.

The best thing I did in my first year driving was buy a satnav. Then I could go anywhere knowing that even if I took a wrong turning it would all be OK. And because it gives you lots of advance warning for junctions etc, it meant I could get used to motorway driving without having to learn to navigate at the same time. I know they're not cheap but to me it was absolutely worth every penny for the peace of mind. I have only just given up on it, partly because I'm much more confident in handling the car and partly because I now have a smartphone which will get me home if I get lost!

I have to say I agree with the Satnav idea, it really does take the worry out of getting somewhere so you can concentrate on your driving.
But these things take time, I know that I'm, the most inept that ever stepped.
