I know this isnt really a techie question but dont know where to put it. I have a free trial of Avast antivirus on my laptop which is due to expire shortly. Is it worth paying for this one or are there better av's available. I think its around £27 something when the trial expires

Avira and Avast are now maybe the best regarded of the free anti-virus available, just get the free version. You must have some sort of "pro" or paid for version trial.0

AVG is effective, but the latest version has had some issues that have yet to be resolved. The program is also getting too big and starting to slow computers down.
Do not get Symantec/Norton. This is bloatware of the worst sort. Your computer will die of old age before anything happens."Never underestimate the mindless force of a government bureaucracyseeking to expand its power, dominion and budget"Jay Stanley, American Civil Liberties Union.0 -
If you choose the 'register' option, I think you can choose to register the free version - an odd quirk of avast (gives you 30 days 'free trial' of a free product). Or download a fresh copy of the free version, and register it - this gives you 1 year free.IT Field Service Engineer, 20 years with screwdriver and hammer0

I would suggest one of Avira, Microsoft Security Essentials and Avast from the free AV programmes available. Kaspersky from the paid ones, if you prefer.Offical MSE Fantasy League Member :footie:0

I ended up removing Avira, it kept blocking some games and threw up a lot of false positivesIT Field Service Engineer, 20 years with screwdriver and hammer0

I have been using Avast (free version) for the past 3 years, they send an email after a year, asking you to either renew the existing version, or get the paid version!
I have never had a virus that Avast hasn't caught, EXCELLENT in my opinionWhen man sacrifices the Love of POWER for the Power of Love, there will be peace on earth.0 -
Microsoft Security Essentials
.
Kaspersky is also good but not free (unless you have a barclays current account and internet banking)0 -
Thanks for all the info, I thought I had downloaded the free version but now keep getting a pop up saying its due to expire. Will probably stick with Avast then as it was recommended to me by a member here and most of you seem to regard it....thanks0

susi,
Can you show us what the popup looks like?
I am guessing that you have downloaded the free version, which has asked you to register after 30 days (IIRC)
Really, the registration is more for statistics/info than anything else.
If you have trouble registering the free version: avast! support article --> avast! 5.x: Inserting the license key into avast! Free Antivirus-Scott-
