Router/internet problems?

Options
Asking this for my dad, so I won't have immediate answers to any questions.

My parents internet connection has recently just stopped working. Was fine, then went really intermittent, now won't work at all.

Theory was it was the router - but he's tried it at my house, works fine, took my router back to his, got it set up there, worked intermittently then gave up.

Been on the phone to the ISP (Zen) who've done several line tests and say it's all fine - don't know what these involved though.

Any suggestions before they pay BT £145 to come and tell them there's nothing wrong? :(
Excuse any mis-spelt replies, there's probably a cat sat on the keyboard

What lights are showing on the router? (at your parents)
Is it responding to enquiries about status?
When you got your router back home (after it "gave up" at your parents) was it working again?
Any other problems with the phone line?
Have you asked BT to do a remote test?
  • How intermittent is the issue. What lights are visible on the router. Is there any noise on the line? Have you replaced the filter on the line at your parents house? Can you get on the router status page and copy the information here?

  • If the router works at yours, but not theirs and vice versa, it looks very like the line.

    2 thoughts.

Are they wireless? have you removed the wireless element if so to be sure its nothing to do with that, so hard wire the PC to router first (you have probably done that?)

Any cabling from point of entry in the home to the Router? you would be amazed how telephone extensions deteriorate after a few short months in a humid home, under carpet etc.

Have you moved the router so it is right by the socket with the shortest quality cable you can?

Your ISP can check only as far as the BT echange server, then its an Open reach engineer to do a house/echange test, and that can be costly. I presume therefore that have had the connection a fair while as they are not under ant warranties?

Change supplier! get a new contract from ***, then enjoy new connection free tech support. woo hoo!
Marry a Foreigner, its so much cheaper!

I would also check this as the next stage.
