Direct Debit changes

Can somebody tell me how the process of changing direct debit instructions should work please?

In mid-July, I contacted each of the companies with whom I have direct debits to give them the details of a different bank account from which to take money. As expected, they advised that it would probably be too late for August payments - it was - but the account details would be changed for September.

The payments are due to be taken in the first week of September, however when I view my accounts online, only one of the DD bills is shown under the new bank account, with the others still listed under the old account.

Should this be expected? I guessed that the changes might only be shown after the September payments, but the one company that is showing correctly hasn't been paid yet either. I'm not sure why one would show the change where others don't.

Any advice/reassurance welcomed!

They should all really be setup on the new account now, it generally takes 10-14 days. I'd ring the companies up to make sure they have changed your details over.

The Mandate (which is essentially what you're viewing) needs to be in place before DDs can be actioned against that account. So it is the missing ones which are not yet set up on the new account (and should be after over a month).

Once they're set up on the new account - delete them on the old account, as that doesn't happen automatically. (Your originators should only be targetting the new account - but better to play safe)

I'll be making sure that there is enough in both accounts to cover September DD's, just in case, but I have all the relevant phone numbers and names of the advisers I spoke to if I need to complain in a few days time.

Thanks Mike - I should have remembered that their deletion from an old account isn't automatic after seeing lots of ancient, inactive mandates listed when I first registered for internet banking. Hopefully this is will be the case for the imminent payments.
