Does anyone know what the term 'next of kin' actually means? I've been asked to put down details of my next of kin but i don't have any blood relatives in this country. Could i put down my best friend's details instead?

next of kin are the people who legally are your closest relations.. it doesn't matter if they are not in this country0 -
The nearest blood relative is your next of kin. Doesnt matter where in the world they are.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
You can nominate someone other than a blood relative to be your chosen "next of kin" - after all, some people may loathe their own family members however close by they may be in physical distance

There's a good explanation in this leaflet, plus a proforma card to complete and carry with you to make your intentions clear.

Next of kin and contact in case of emergency are usually treated as different things and can have different answers. Who is asking for your next of kin?0
-
Depends who is asking.
If you go into hospital, they just want to know who to call if your condition deteriorates - you can nominate anyone.
If someone is sectioned under the Mental Health Act there is a strict definition of 'next of kin.
Insurance policies (which often refer to next of kin) have different definitions again - indeed different insurance companies will have different definitions!0 -

The university want to know your family's contact details in case anything should happen to you while you are at the university.
It's simple, give them full contact details of whoever is your next of kin: mother or father usually.
If they don't speak English, don't worry. Universities have people on the staff who will speak your language.0 -
If its for university registration, dont put down your best friend. Parents, siblings or husband/wife (if more appropriate) would be the most suitable candidates.0
