ODB code reader compatible with Berlingo 2002/engine advice
Cut a long story short, my son likes a challenge so bought a berlingo 2.0 hdi 2002 with an engine fault. Vehicle was towed home (on trade plates) has no mot, insurance and is sorn. The engine has a very bad miss and appears to be runing on 3 cylinders with lots and lots of white/grey smoke when revved. He has tried lots of things, but can't seem to get anywhere. We have looked at getting a fault reader but alot don't seem to be compatible with the berlingo( have tried elm 327 with v1.2 and that doesn't work.) We would have to tow it again to citroen to get it on their machine but nearest garage is 15 miles away and already been told will be £100  so any way to try and save money would be much appreciated.

I would have thought that with the symptoms you describe it seems more likely to be a major mechanical failure ie head gasket blown, piston failure, head valve failure etc, rather than an electrical sensor failure which can be detected with the diagnostic reader. But good luck anyway.0

as said it is more likely mechanical related, does the EML come on when running?
personally i would try unplugging an injector at a time to see which one makes no difference to determine which cylinder is not working i would then do a compression test before paying for a diag test.0 -
2 injectors on common rail furthest from pump when disconnected( 1 at a time)multi plug connector make no difference to engine tone. The 2 nearest the pump on the rail when disconnected cut the engine. He has swapped the 2 furthest away injectors with the 2 closest to the pump to test injectors but no difference. It had new pump november last year at citroen(previous owner). When he disconnected the fuel out pipe from pump there was very little pressure behind the fuel, more of a dribble, he thinks it should be more? And no eml light.0

If there is no eml on then a code reader will probably not pick anything up.
Sounds like the next checks to do are fuel pressure and compression on the 2 cylinders.
Also if fuel pump does turn out to be faulty so long as you got receipt it will be covered under the 12 month warranty0 -
There lies the problem, as we do not have the receipt, although citroen themselves told us that they had done the job, did wonder if the pump is faulty, but i think we might have to call a mobile mechanic as we can't really take it anywhere.0

Done compression test now, reading between 18 and 20 in each but 1 in number 2, think we have found our problem.
off with the cylinder head then, but first i would put a few squirts of oil down no2 and see if compression goes up.
if it does then you got a bore/ring problem if it stays same then valve related, that way you can decide if it is worth the stripping if bottom end has probs might be better getting a second hand lump.0 -
Not sure what my son did, but he borrowed compression tester from a local garage and it had to go back so can't do it again, but head is hopefully going to be off today , but still might have to get a second hand engine but its the siemens one and all the ones we have looked at are bosch.0

the siemens or bosch will be the engine electrics,so long as you get the correct HDI engine second hand then you can sawp all the electrics from yours over.can assume they will be ok as it looks like internal problems.personally i would swap the bits over anyway so i did not have to get citroen to reprogramme control units.
there are 2 hdi lumps used in 2002 90 or 110bhp i would hazard a guess a berlingo is 90.
the basic engine will be same in 306,406,xsara etc aswell as partner, expert and berlingo vans so there should be loads around just make sure you get the correct bhp0 -
Yes it is the 90, he is going to see what lies underneath before he finally decides whether to swap the engine over, he would like to see this one going (impulsive 19 year old, thinks he can do anything!) but will update this when he gets it off.Very grateful for all the advice recieved.0
